Rally On: Build Confidence without Breaking a Sweat

Rally On: Build Confidence without Breaking a Sweat

Ready to rally?  In pickleball, a rally is the heart of the game and refers to the sequence where players hit the ball back and forth over the net until one team wins the rally by forcing an error or scoring a point. Rallying can happen when drilling with a partner to refine skills, during warm-ups before a game, or in the heat of a match where points are on the line. As players develop their game, rallying becomes a showcase of strategy, skill, and quick thinking that can turn the game into exciting showdowns.

Mastering consistency in rallies builds confidence and control, allowing you to dictate the game's pace. Start a rally with steady shots to develop consistency and get a rhythm, then focus on placement and varying your shots as you improve. During warm-ups or the first couple of points of a match, purposely extend the rally to discover your opponents' weaknesses, how they handle pressure, and their court coverage in doubles. By mastering rallies, you gain control, confidence, and a deeper understanding of your opponent(s) game.

During a game, whether or not your team scores a point after a rally depends on the scoring method. In Traditional Scoring, you must win the rally to score a point. In Rally Scoring, the team that wins the rally scores a point, regardless of who served- with the exception of game point where you must serve to win the game.
